Q. How can I find out if there is a water leak in my house?
A. How to Check your Water System for Leaks
The Village is responsible for providing quality water service to the Village residents. For this a fee is assessed based on the amount of water consumed by an individual user. In order to make sure your not being charged for water you are not using it is important to make sure that you do not have any water leaks. This is a step by step guide to how you can check your system for leaks.
Why is it important to check for leaks
For starters a leak in your system may result in the user being charged more for water that is technically not being used. Also since the sewer rates are determined by the amount of water being used a leak will result in a higher bill for sewage.
If there is a leak the water has to be going somewhere, but just how much water is leaking depends on the size of the whole. For example if the diameter of the whole is ¼" this could result in a loss of approximately 1,181,500 gallons of water in a three month period. Depending on the location of the leak this water could be going anywhere which could result in water damage to the home. Finding leaks fast could help prevent loss as well as save money which will help to keep water and sewer rates low. (use ruler with this to help illustrate the size of leaks and their affects)
Q. If I have a sewage backup, whose responsibility is it and who do I call to fix it?
A. Residents are encouraged to call the Village first when there appears to be a blockage in their sewer line. Village personnel will check the main sewer to determine the blockage location. If the sewer main is blocked, Public Works crews will clear the sewer line; a blockage in the service line is the residents responsibility. The Public Works Department has a list of qualified plumbers who are licensed to work in the Village.
