Minimum Requirements

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners of the Village of Hazel Crest is responsible for the selection of probationary officers. Applicants must:

Department Insignia

  • Be at least 20 years of age and 21 years of age at time of appointment;

  • Have earned at least 60 credit hours in a law enforcement (or related) curriculum from an accredited college or must have completed the Illinois Mandatory Basic Training Course for police officers;

  • Be a U.S. citizen;

  • Have or be able to obtain a valid Illinois driver's license;

  • Must be of good moral character;

  • Must meet health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of duty; and

  • Successfully complete the testing process consisting of the following:One of the new PC equipped squad cars

  • Orientation Session

  • Written Examination

  • Physical Aptitude Test

  • Psychological Test

  • Background Investigation

  • Oral Interview

  • Medical Examination

An eligibility register is published ranking those who have successfully completed all parts of the process and is valid for two years.

Training for Sworn Personnel

The profession of law enforcement is very dynamic and an officer's duties are many and varied. So to prepare and assist new recruits in becoming proficient, all new Hazel Crest Police Department officers must comply with the State of Illinois' basic training requirement which is successful completion of a 400 hour basic training course at one of the basic training academies recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

The curriculum will also include medical training equivalent to that contained in the Emergency Medical Services: First Responder training courses of the National Highway Safety Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation and the recruit officer must complete a mandatory firearms training course required by law as well as the Hazel Crest Police Department's Firearms Training Course prior to carrying a Firearm.

lee.jpg (28232 bytes)Following graduation from the academy, new recruits go through a 12 week field training program with certified Field Training Officer(s) as well as instruction in emergency vehicle operations, CPR, hazardous materials and range qualification.

After successful completion of the recruit's probationary period which is 18 months, the department continues to train officers in the latest law enforcement developments and techniques in areas of cultural awareness, arrest/search and seizure law, and street gangs, to name but a few.

Civilian Employees

The Civil Service Commission of the Village of Hazel Crest is responsible for the selection of civilian employees of the Hazel Crest Police Department.

Civilian employees include: clerk/dispatcher, administrative secretary, community service officer, and part-time data entry clerk. Specific qualifications for each position are announced at the time testing is conducted by the Commission.

The selection process for applicants includes written exam(s), an oral interview, a background investigation, and a medical examination. Applicants for clerk/dispatcher will also be administered a psychological examination.

An eligibility register is published ranking those who have successfully completed all parts of the process and is valid for two years.

The Police Department also periodically hires school crossing guards as part-time seasonal employees who are hired directly by the Police Department.

The Police Department does offer a Pre-Application Card which you can complete if you are interested in a particular position. This card should be returned to the Police Station and when applications become available for the particular position, you will be notified by mail to come in to pick up an application.

The Hazel Crest Department of Fire, Rescue, & Inspectional Services is staffed by both career and Part-Time men and women. The Part-Time members are Hazel Crest residents, your neighbors, who are taking their available time to help the community. A Part-Time Firefighter receives the same training as a career firefighter and has the same responsibilities for providing emergency services to our residents. Part-Time members are an important part of our Department's operations and services.

About the Department…

We provide a wide range of services to the community which include fire suppression, emergency medical services, inspection / building department functions, community education, and public information. Our staffing consists of 15 career and 22 part-time members. Our members are trained to the highest possible levels with Office of the State Fire Marshal certifications, Paramedic & EMT Basic licensure, and aggressive pursuit of higher education. We operate out of two fire stations with a state of the art, apparatus fleet of 2 ALS ambulances, 1 reserve ambulance, 3 pumpers, 1 aerial ladder, and numerous support vehicles. We are a service oriented organization and adhere to our Mission of "providing excellent service to those we serve and protect".

About the Part-Time Program…

Our Part-Time Program is made up of both traditional Paid On Call members and part-time personnel. All non career Department members are considered "part-time " personnel. At the minimum level and based upon qualifications, part-time members are required to participate in the shift coverage program. The various coverage shifts are structured as follows: Monday through Friday - 1600 to 2100 & 2100 to 0600; Saturday and Sunday – 0800 to 1600, 1600 to 2100, & 2100 to 0600 ( 2100 – 0800 on the Saturday Shift); Various daily coverage shifts based upon need. Members participating in the shift coverage program must possess the following minimum certifications: Firefighter II , Driver/Operator, & Non Probationary Status. The base hourly pay rate for Firefighter certification level is $8.50. The hourly pay schedule increases with rank/certifications (i.e. Firefighter/EMT Basic - $10.85, Firefighter/Paramedic - $13.25).

In addition to the shift coverage program, part-time personnel may choose to participate in the call back program. Participating members are provided a Department voice pager and would be required, when available, to respond to their assigned station upon " All Call " pages. Call back coverage is paid by the hour and the rate is dependent upon rank/certifications. All paychecks for part-time personnel are issued on the last payday of the month. part-time members will also be eligible for participation in extra curricular events such as special assignments and public education details.

Entry level personnel with no fire fighting or emergency medical experience will receive various levels of training in preparation for State certifications and license. The pay rate for this entry level status is $5.25. All new members will be placed on probationary status for time periods that are based upon certifications and licenses. The base time frames are listed as follows: Entry level member with no experience - 1 year; Certified Fire Fighter II – 3 months; Certified Firefighter II with EMT B or Paramedic – 3 months. All personnel will be provided with protective clothing at the time of hiring. Special order protective clothing will not be provided until the member has successfully completed the designated probationary period.
