Residential Burglaries

Emergency Bracelet Program

Project ChildSafe®

In recent months, the Village of Hazel Crest has experienced a surge in Residential Burglaries. In this article, we will  provide you with useful information about residential burglaries and ways to help prevent them.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, residential burglaries occur at the rate of one every ten seconds.  Most burglaries occur during the daylight hours. A majority of the burglaries occur during the weekday, while most occupants are away at work or school.

There are several factors which burglars use to  decide what homes to burglarize. Homes located on corners are the most susceptible.  There is less natural surveillance and cover. Homes located near the middle of the block are less susceptible. Homes which appear vacant or unoccupied are likely targets. Also, homes were the occupants appear to be away are targets. Homes with overgrown bushes and trees provide ideal concealment for burglars. Homes without outdoor lighting also provide cover of darkness for burglars who prowl at night.

Here are some simple tips to help prevent residential burglaries:

  • Remember to close and lock all doors and windows

  • Install quality door and window locks

  • Secure garage windows and doors

  • Light the exterior of the residence, paying particular attention to the rear of the home

  • Trim or cut away trees, bushes and shrubbery from windows or other places of entry

  • Secure vents, coal ducts and any outside entrance to residence

  • Know your neighbors

  • When away from home, arrange for mail pick-up

  • Make home appear occupied

  • When away, let family, trusted friends or neighbors know intended time of departure and return

  • If available, utilize police dept. vacation home watch

  • Arrange for a security survey by the police dept.

  • Note: services available at Hazel Crest Police  Dept.

The senior I.D. bracelets program currently has over ninety members. The bracelet program is designed to assist in times of medical needs. It is also available to younger citizens who have been diagnosed with an illness and can use the bracelet as a communication device to paramedics.

Applications are available at the Hazel Crest Police Department, 3000 W. 170th Place and must be filled out and signed before receiving a bracelet. You can set up an appointment by calling the police department at 708-335-9640 ask for Ofc. Cathey who will give you further information about the program.
